Beginner’s Guide to Pickleball
Presented by Global Branding Sports

What exactly is Pickleball? Why is it called Pickleball? Does it even have anything to do with pickles? Don’t worry—we’ve put together this quick-start guide to help you understand this exciting and fast-growing sport!
What Is Pickleball?
Pickleball is a paddle sport that blends elements of badminton, tennis, and table tennis. It’s played on a badminton-sized court with a net lowered to 36 inches at the ends. Players use wooden or composite paddles and a plastic, perforated ball. It can be played in singles or doubles format.

Where Did It Come From?
Pickleball was invented in 1965 by Joel Pritchard and Bill Bell, who were trying to entertain their families during a summer in Washington. Lacking badminton rackets, they used ping-pong paddles and a wiffle ball. Along with friend Barney McCallum, they developed the game’s first rules.
Why Is It Called Pickleball?
Contrary to the popular dog story, the name came from Joan Pritchard, who thought the game reminded her of a “pickle boat” in rowing, where leftover rowers from other teams are put together. The story of a dog named Pickles came later—and while cute, it’s not the origin!
How Do You Play?
The game starts with an underhand serve across the net. The ball must bounce once on each side before players can volley it. There’s a non-volley zone, or “kitchen,” where players can’t smash the ball in the air. Games are played to 11 points, and you must win by 2.
